Position Details

The Village of Manhattan, Illinois, seeks an experienced police professional to lead its Police Department consisting of 3 sergeants, 10 full time officers, multiple sworn part time officers, and two civilian employees.

Manhattan is a full-service community located southwest of Chicago adjacent to New Lenox and Joliet with approximately 10,000 residents. Manhattan is 10 minutes from I-55, I-80, I-57 and the southern terminus of I-355, the Village of Manhattan is easily accessible to the entire Chicagoland region.

Manhattan maintains a very low crime rate and a friendly hometown atmosphere offering a superior quality of life in which to live, work, and to raise a family. The Village offers quality housing stock, access to area interstates and commuter rail, excellent schools and municipal services.

Candidates for the Village's Police Chief must have:

  • Seven years of experience in law enforcement management or leadership.
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related field or have an equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the requisite skills and abilities to effectively perform the duties of Police Chief.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience presenting ideas, information, and concepts to elected officials, staff, and community.
  • Commitment to training, professional development and community/ problem solving policing.
  • A proven record of visibility and participation in the community.
  • Management experience that promotes the team atmosphere and professional development of staff.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Experience with budgeting and personnel management, grant administration and crime intervention and prevention.
