Position Details

The Village of Tinley Park (population approx. 57,000) is seeking an experienced law enforcement professional to provide leadership in the full-time position of Deputy Police Chief with the Village of Tinley Park Police Department.

The Tinley Park Police Department has more than 150 sworn and non-sworn employees split into two divisions: Operations, which is in charge of patrol, and Administration, which is charge of records and investigations.

The police department is responsible for various programs including Crime Prevention, the Crime Free Rental Housing Program, National Night Out, the Citizen's Police Academy and the Radar Loan Program.

Under the direction of the Police Chief, this position is responsible for supervisory law enforcement duties including organizing and directing the administrative and operations activities of the Police Department. Work involves responsibility for directing, coordinating, and supervising administrative, personnel, budgetary, purchase requisition and records management functions of the Police Department. This role will also have primary responsibility for planning and administering all patrol and investigative-related divisions and services of the Police department. This position will represent the Village with law enforcement agencies, government agencies, and outside professional and community group, and other duties as delegated by the Police Chief. This position is second in command and serves as the Police Chief in their absence.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Business or Public Administration, or a related field;
  • Graduation from the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, or Southern Police Institute preferred.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience, including at least three (3) years of managerial experience, in order to effectively manage activities of police administrative support services.
  • Basic certification from the Illinois Local Governmental Police Training Board as "Police Officer" or equivalency.
  • Prior experience working with unions and handling internal investigations is required.
  • Prior media experience preferred and must be able to be on-call when required.
  • Must maintain all Federal, State, and Local requirements to carry a firearm.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency with Outlook, Word, Excel and ability to use different software programs.

  • Possess an outstanding work ethic, demonstrated leadership skills, positive attitude, and is a strong communicator.
  • Have the ability to develop effective working relationships with Village staff, elected officials, and the community.
  • Must be able to make decisive decisions, provide direction, and respond accordingly to operational demands.
  • Have experience with budgeting, union contract negotiations, internal investigations, special operations (i.e., SWAT, crowd control, mobile field force, etc.), policy development, and policing strategies.

Residency Requirement:

All employees in this position are required to reside within thirty (30) miles from any border of Tinley Park, within twelve (12) months of employment date. Residency in Indiana in not permitted. No relocation expenses provided or reimbursed.
