Position Details

The Harper College Police Department is currently seeking applicants for Police Sergeant position.

The Police Sergeant is responsible for supervision and leadership of a patrol shift. The Sergeant will coordinate the enforcement duties by directing the activities of the patrol shift, and the civilian workforce within the Police Department. The successful candidate will lead and direct the shift efforts in providing services to the college community and the protection of College assets at all two campus locations. You will be responsible for the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws, and the Harper College rules, regulations, and policies. You will also serve as the Acting Chief of Police in the absence of the Chief and the Deputy Chief.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field or combination of college education and experience or equivalent experience.
  • Prior experience as a law enforcement supervisor
  • Sworn police officer as defined by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) and experience that includes operational characteristics, services, and activities of a law enforcement program.
    • Modern and complex principles and practices of law enforcement including identification and investigative techniques.
    • Advanced patrol techniques including officer safety skills.
    • Principles and practices of traffic enforcement.
    • Laws governing the apprehension, arrest, and custody of accused persons. Use of firearms and other modern police equipment.
    • Recent court decisions affecting law enforcement.
    • Principles of budget preparation and control.
    • Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
    • Modem office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications.
    • Principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation.
    • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws. codes and regulations.
    • Navigating the criminal justice system including courts and corrections.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid Illinois Driver's License
  • Valid F.O.I.D. Card
  • Preferred Qualifications include:
    • Completion of Supervision of Police Personnel (two-week course) or an equivalent law enforcement supervision course
    • Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command
    • Southern Police Institute Administrative Officer Course
    • FBI National Academy, or an equivalent intensive leadership and management education course for senior command positions
    • Experience is the police accreditation process
