Position Details

The Commander:

  • Responsible for successful outcomes within the Public Safety Department.
  • Performs recruitment, supervision, evaluation, and training of sworn and non-sworn staff.
  • Plans and directs operational and administrative resources in performance of patrol operations, special event planning, emergency management investigations; reports and report writing; plus, the application and enforcement of departmental policies.
  • Manages the District's accreditation process and compliance to all regulation mandates through agencies such as ILETSB, FEMA, Homeland Security, and local Emergency Management.
  • Coordinates with staff to develop safety, crime awareness and crime prevention education, and outreach initiatives. Identifies, researches and evaluates best practices in policing; formulates proposals and recommendations; and, implements process improvement initiatives.
  • Manages criminal and non-criminal caseloads, employing proper investigative and interview techniques, including processing of crime scenes, rules of evidence, court system and proper courtroom procedures, search and seizure laws, and federal and state asset forfeiture procedures.
  • Drives a motorized vehicle to travel to different locations.
  • Performs tasks that will require walking, bending, stooping, standing, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and sitting. Performs lifting tasks up to 50 pounds.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in conservation, law enforcement, criminal justice, or related field.
  • Eight years related experience necessary to gain a full understanding and proficiency in law enforcement, recreation and natural resource management, personnel and financial management, and public administration.
  • Two years supervisory experience.
  • Completion of basic police training approved by the state and local law enforcement officers training board.
  • Attendance and completion of advanced management and leadership training (Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command, FBI Academy, or other similar programs) or the ability to complete this training within one year of hire.
  • Ability to successfully qualify with duty side arm on a regular basis; ability to successfully qualify in specialized training areas as necessary.
  • Experience in developing and implementing new and revised administrative methods, policies, and procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of federal and state laws and local ordinances pertinent to the Public Safety function.
  • Proficient in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
