Position Details

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Management or related field with a minimum of seven (7) years (twelve preferred) of law enforcement experience, of which five (5) years include progressively responsible administrative and supervisory experience.
  • Management level program completion through the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University Center for Public Safety or equivalent program is preferred.
  • Must be a certified Police Officer in the State of Illinois in accordance with Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
  • A valid driver's license is required. 

Expertise:

  • Expertise and ability to train, mentor, and supervise staff, delegate tasks, set priorities, and hold staff accountable for achieving goals and objectives.
  • Ability to promptly and effectively respond to critical emergencies, demonstrating sound decision-making skills in high-pressure situations.
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of both Federal and local laws and ordinances, staying consistently informed about any updates or modification regulations.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in the preparation and oversight of the department's operation budget and capital needs.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment where priorities can shift quickly.
  • Experience in labor relations, including contract negotiations, grievances and unions and demonstrate exceptional negotiating skills.
  • Proficient in computers and current police technology, with the flexibility to accommodate new technology into the operation.
  • Expertise in the research, development and implementation of policies and procedures to further streamline and professionalize Department operations. 

Leadership and Management Style:

  • The ability to provide a steady and professional presence within the Department, the Village, and the community at-large.
  • Be an excellent communicator, a person capable and committed to discussing Police matters, policies and practices with various stakeholders openly and on a level they can understand, recommending change where appropriate.
  • Have a background of leading by example, demonstrating experience in employee motivation on and discipline.
  • Exhibit an inherent sense of professional and personal ethics.
  • Be a highly motivated and self-starting leader who compliments both the Department's team and the Village's team of Directors.
