Position Details

The Village of Oquawka, Illinois, is seeking qualified, experienced, and community-oriented candidates for the position of Chief of Police.

This is a full-time leadership position responsible for overseeing all operations of the Oquawka Police Department and ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.

Position Summary:

The Chief of Police serves as the head of the Oquawka Police Department and is responsible for planning, directing, and supervising all departmental activities, including law enforcement operations, ordinance enforcement, personnel management, budgeting, policy development, and community engagement. The Chief reports directly to the Mayor (Direct Supervisor) and Village Board and works closely with local, county, and state agencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct and supervise all police department operations and personnel
  • Enforce local, state, and federal laws and ordinances
  • Develop, implement, and maintain departmental policies, procedures, and training programs
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and departmental documentation
  • Serve as a liaison with other law enforcement agencies, emergency services, and the public
  • Respond to major incidents and emergencies as required
  • Promote positive community relations and community-oriented policing efforts

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must meet all requirements for appointment as a police officer in the State of Illinois
  • Valid Illinois driver's license
  • High school diploma or GED required; higher education in criminal justice or related field preferred
  • Ability to pass:
    • background investigation
    • drug screening
    • physical examination
    • psychological evaluation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience as a Police Chief, Assistant Chief, or command-level officer
  • Strong leadership, communication, and administrative skills
  • Knowledge of Illinois law enforcement standards, practices, and procedures
  • Experience working in or with small or rural communities
