Position Details
The Town of Blountsville is seeking an experienced, ethical, and community-minded law enforcement professional to serve as its next Chief of Police. The ideal candidate will be a visible, approachable leader who values integrity, accountability, and public service.
As Chief of Police, you will oversee all operations of the Blountsville Police Department while working closely with the Mayor, Town Council, department personnel, neighboring agencies, local schools, businesses, and residents. In a small-town environment, the Chief is expected to lead by example, build lasting community relationships, and provide responsive, professional law enforcement services.
Essential Duties
- Direct and oversee the daily operations of the Police Department.
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate department personnel.
- Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and operational goals.
- Manage the department's budget, equipment, and other resources responsibly.
- Foster strong relationships with residents through community policing and public outreach.
- Coordinate with county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, as well as Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) requirements.
- Oversee patrol operations, criminal investigations, evidence management, emergency response, and departmental records.
- Prepare reports and attend Town Council meetings to provide updates on public safety initiatives.
- Current Alabama APOSTC certification or the ability to obtain certification as required by state law.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience.
- At least three (3) years of supervisory or command-level experience.
- Demonstrated leadership, sound judgment, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Commitment to ethical policing, transparency, and community engagement.
- Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field is preferred but not required.
- Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check to include fingerprint-based state and national criminal background check completed by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).
- Must pass a drug test, possess a valid Alabama Drivers License at time of appointment and drivers history report from ALEA.
- Must reside in Blount County, Alabama
